    I created the piece by collaging together painted and screenprinted paper and drawings. I like the idea of an exuberant garden that breaks apart the cell, growing out of the walls and floors. I feel that by showing this person looking at these plants with wonder, it shows the feeling of wonder and freedom, and we can relate to that, and connect with how beautiful the future will be when we make prisons history.

    This digital collage visualizes defunding the police, and actively investing in black futures. On the left there is a depiction of police artifacts in the distant past turning into a river. The river flows into the future, where it is a resource for a flourishing black community.

    I wanted to call on the purifying & timeless properties of water to show how resources will flow out of white supremacist systems, and become a foundation for building black futures. The river represents a holistic self-replenishing resource that is more valuable than money, because investing in black futures requires more than just a financial investment.

    The community is lively, surrounded by butterflies, bees, and plant life. This policy point has an emphasis on wellness, environmental justice, and family justice, so I wanted to show the abundance that will result from investing in black life, joy, and prosperity.
